Betty Martin

February 9, 1931 — August 10, 2018

Betty Lane Grisham Martin, 87, passed from this world into her heavenly home on Friday, August 10, 2018 after a brief illness.

She was born in Baldwyn February 9, 1931 to Robert Paul and Sarah Lorene Carr Grisham. She graduated from Baldwyn High School where she was active in several clubs and also attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College.

On June 24, 1956, Betty married Webster County native, John Berl Martin at First Baptist Church in Baldwyn. They were married for 50 years before his death in 2007.

Betty was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 40 years. She served on church committees, taught children's Sunday School and was actively engaged in W.M.U., Women on Mission and Calvary Friends. She was the Pastor's Secretary for 16 years and wrote a weekly article for the Calvary Caller after retiring. Her grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as "Nana", remember her polishing weekly articles on her at-home typewriter and visiting with friends on her landline phone.

She enjoyed traveling with her church group, visiting new places and taking pictures to remember her travels. She faithfully prayed for, visited and sent cards of encouragement to those who were in need. Betty loved going to the Wellness Center to both exercise and socialize. She dearly loved her family- they were her pride and joy.

Survivors are her son, John Trenton Martin and his wife, Beth of Tupelo; and granddaughters, Betsy Martin and Katybeth Martin both of Dallas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; and her husband.

Services honoring her life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2018 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with her pastor, Rev. Jim Yates officiating. Private interment will be at Wake Forest Cemetery in Dancy.

Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors, Tupelo.

The family wishes to thank special friends, Roy Couvion and Ricky Jackson, as well as the members of her Sunday School class at Calvary Baptist Church. Sincere thanks to her many caregivers at the Page Greenhouse for their care of Mother.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lottie Moon Foreign Mission Offering through Calvary Baptist Church, 501 W. Main St. Tupelo, MS 38804 or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 706 Tupelo, MS 38802.
