Betty Long
Saltillo- Lucy Elizabeth “Betty” Cobb Long, 83, a bright light that found joy in making others smile died Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born July 6, 1939 in Tupelo; she was one of three children of John Simpson Cobb and Brown “Brownie” Elkin Taylor Cobb. In 1957 Betty graduated from Tupelo High School and attended Blue Mountain College, prior to completing she married James “Jimmy” Lee Long. They were married for 49 years before his death. Betty was a devoted wife, mother of four boys, and homemaker. She was an active part in all her husband’s many business ventures; her favorite business was wholesaling handbags across the state.
Betty was also a longtime faithful member of East Main Church of Christ for over 35 years. Betty was a member of East Heights Garden Club and a founding member of The Bunco Group. She enjoyed playing card games and divulging in her favorite chocolates.
Betty leaves behind her sons, James Lee “Jim” Long, Jr of Memphis, Tennessee, Larry Long and his wife, Suzanne, of Saltillo, and Tony Long of Tupelo; six grandchildren, Chessie Sabino and her husband, Ray, of Ridgefield, Washington, James Lee “Jay” Long, III of New Albany, Christie Renfro and her husband, Chris, of Benton, Arkansas, Clayton Long and his wife, Savanna of Saltillo, Lauren Long of Saltillo, and Cole Long of Manchester, New Hampshire; five great-grandchildren, Preston Morgan, Gabriel Long, Maddie Renfro, Jude Renfro, and Ellie Renfro; one sister, Allayne LaValley and her husband, Ken, of Brunswick, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Long; son, Scott Long; grandson, Cody Long; parents, John S. and Brownie Cobb; and brother, Tommy Cobb.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2023 at East Main Church of Christ with Minister Barry Kennedy officiating. Graveside services will follow at Tupelo Memorial Park. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time Sunday, June 4, 2023 at East Main Church of Christ.
Pallbearers will be Jason Dickinson, Jason Kelly, Brad Nichols, Steve McCarter, Jon Stack, and Dean Webb. Todd Nichols, Terry Wilson, and Chris White will serve as honorary pallbearers.
