Shannon - Betty Peters Grubbs, 71, went to meet her Lord and Savior Thursday, October 23, 2008, at her home in Shannon after an extended illness. She was born January 20, 1937, to the late John and Wilma Towery Peters. In December she would have celebrated her 56th wedding anniversary to her childhood sweetheart, former Justice Court Judge, Mayo Grubbs. Betty attended Nettleton and Shannon Schools and Itawamba Community College.
Having read the Bible through many times, she was a devout Christian and servant of the Lord. Betty was a member of Doty Chapel Baptist Church since 1953. She accepted Christ at the early age of 13. She was an active church member throughout her life. She attended classes through the Southern Baptist Association, where she read every course book which enabled her to be church librarian, Sunday School teacher, Training Union teacher, and church historian for many years. She went on a mission trip to Manassas, VA and helped start many churches in that area.
Betty was a homemaker for most of her life, but worked for twelve years in the justice system with her husband. She was the editor of the Mississippi Justice Court magazine, Mississippi Justice Court Officers Association, for ten years. While in the justice system, she attended classes in Nevada and Colorado and received awards for services rendered. She also worked as a teachers assistant at Shannon Elementary. Betty was an avid sports fan and greatly enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, especially her favorite players, Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira. She also enjoyed Nascar, her favorites being Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Doty Chapel Baptist Church with Dr. W.E. Bill Mason, Rev. Jim Manley, Rev. Bill Adams, and Rev. Jack Ezell officiating. A special tribute will be held honoring her many years as a teacher at church and school. Her former students are encouraged to participate. Burial will be in Doty Chapel Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her devoted husband of nearly 56 years and love of her life, Mayo Grubbs of Shannon; two sons, Terry Grubbs and wife, Nell, and Randy Joe Grubbs and wife, Patricia; one sister, Shirley Hawkins; five brothers, Gary Peters and wife, Anna, Jerry Peters and wife, Judy, Danny Joe Peters and wife, Kathy, Ray Peters and wife, Sue, and Rex Peters and wife, Evelle; six grandchildren, Michael Joe Grubbs, Maegan Grubbs, Jennifer Britt and husband, Michael, Anthony Knight and wife, Teresa, Tracye Nance and husband, Brian, and John Knight; four great grandchildren, Bailey and Tanner Nance and Landon and Lindley Knight; a very special aunt, Elizabeth McCollum.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ricky Eugene Grubbs, her sister, Ruby Joyce Barnette, a grandson, Terry M. Grubbs, Jr., and her parents-in-law, T.T. and Cornelia Grubbs.
Pallbearers will be Barry Garrett, David Cook, Scott Ivy, Jamey Burrow, Bob Kitchen, and Kevin Patterson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Doty Chapel Baptist Church, Lee Moore, James Oswalt, Mike Bray, Bobby Stafford, Timothy Morgan, and Eddie Baker.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service time at the church.
