Berma Ruth Shackelford
Tupelo - Berma Ruth Shackelford, 90, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born October 1, 1926, to Aubrey and Berma Morgan Dillard and raised by her grandparents, Will and Nettie Leora Morgan. She graduated from Mooreville High School. She received a professional degree from East Mississippi Community College at Scooba and taught school for a few years before she married Leonard Shackelford in 1950 and started a family. She was a homemaker and assistant teacher while raising her girls. After her daughters were grown, Berma Ruth went back to school to get her BA and Masters in education from the University of Mississippi. She taught the second grade for a number of years at Lawhon Elementary School until her retirement. Berma Ruth was a very good seamstress in her early years and a wonderful cook. She loved to read, especially the Bible and enjoyed working in her garden. Berma Ruth and her husband loved to travel all over the United States together until their health prevented them from going too far from home. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of Harrisburg Baptist Church and very active in her lady's Sunday school class and the library.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Leonard Ray Shackelford; daughters, Rhonda Rollins (Johnny) of Mooreville and Jill Bonds (Terry) of Atkins, Arkansas; grandchildren, Ben Rollins of Tupelo, Matt Rollins (Lisa) of Tupelo and Christina Brooks (Dale) of Dover, Arkansas; great-grandchildren, Evan and Vivien Rollins and Enoch, Elijah and Ruby Ann Brooks; sister, Martha Taylor (Ralph) of Brooksville; brother, Aubrey Elmo Dillard (Grace) of Warner Robbins, Georgia; niece, Sandy Jetton of Saltillo and caregiver, Carolyn Martin of Tupelo.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2017, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo and one hour prior to service time Saturday.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Graveside services will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Matt Rollins, Ben Rollins, Johnny Rollins, Terry Bonds, Dale Brooks and Cal Smith.
