ED SUMMERS

Mooreville - Benjamin Edward "Ed Summers, 86, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief illness. He was born in Mantachie, Itawamba County, Mississippi October 26, 1920, to the late Ben and Maggie Summers. He was married to Mary Lou Gunter October 3, 1942. She preceded him in death March 29, 2001. He was a veteran on World War II, having served in the South Pacific. He retired from 28 years in the trucking business. He was an avid sportsman and loved working with his bird dogs. He participated in many field trials and was a charter member of the North Auburn Brag Dog Field Trial where he was named Sportsman of the Year. He also was a member of the Houston Bird Hunters Club. He enjoyed attending all sporting events at Mooreville High School and because of his loyalty, the softball field was named "The Ed Summers Field in his honor.

He was a member of Allens Chapel United Methodist Church. He served on the Lee County School Board for 27 years and also served on the Tombigbee Electric Power Association Board and the Northeast Mississippi Natural Gas Board.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2007 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Sammy Washburn and Bro. Smith Whiteside officiating. Burial will be in Gilvo Cemetery

Survivors include five daughters, Meredith Dillard (Lamar), Martha Webb (Phillip), Carol Horton (Gerald), Connie Collins (Nate), and Donna Summers-Davis (Phil); nine grandchildren, Brad Dillard (Kellie), Beth Copeland, Missy Ford (Scott), Phil Webb (Darla), John Mark Webb, David Horton, Chrissi Horton, Galen Collins, and Elise Hllinhead (Clayton); six great-grandchildren, Maggie Copeland, Andrew Ford, Erin Ford, Ethan Ford, Bradley Dillard, and Mary Kirk Dillard; and one sister Wease Brown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Summers; two sisters, Verma Lee Robbins and Qua Nichols; and three brothers, Charlie, Marvin and Jess Summers.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brad Dillard, Phil Webb, John Mark Webb, Scott Ford, David Horton, Galen Collins and Clayton Hollinhead.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
