Barbara A. Hoard
Tupelo - Barbara Annette Richardson Hoard, 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday February 12, 2019. She was born at home in Jacinto on February 22, 1945 to Louvenia Sims and Garvin Richardson. On October 26, 1968, Barbara married her true love, Marvin Hoard, and they moved to Tupelo to begin their life together. Barbara was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved hosting friends and family in her home for celebrations, and watching them enjoy her excellent cooking.
Barbara was a devoted Christian and faithful member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church since 1969. She served as the church treasurer for many years, taught children's Sunday School, was briefly a member of the choir, and could always be counted on to have gum in her purse for any child who asked. Barbara truly loved her church family that provided tremendous support throughout her life, especially as her health declined.
Before retiring, Barbara had a wonderful 44 year long career at the Bank of Mississippi (BancorpSouth). Her work ethic and determination enabled her to advance from Teller to Branch Manager, and on to a First Vice President. She was excited by the opportunities the bank gave her to meet and serve the people in her hometown. To her, the title "customer" meant more than just a client. Her customers were her neighbors and friends. She respected and admired her supervisors, colleagues, and mentors at the bank, including Mr. Aubrey Patterson, whose guidance and trust meant the world to her. She enjoyed her work with many community outreach activities for which she was often recognized.
Barbara was a beautiful, kind lady who put others first. Caring was an action for her. You knew she cared when she called you to share the joys and sorrows in your life, when she baked you a dessert, when she took work calls on the weekend, or when she told you the hard truth. Her smile was as big as her heart. Her honest and trustworthy nature made her a natural confidant and mentor to many people. In 2012, Barbara was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She fought a good fight for seven years before the Lord called her home to rest. She will be missed.
Survivors include two children, Lisa Dow and her husband, James of Atlanta, Georgia and Eric Hoard and his wife, Lori of Tupelo; two grandchildren, Lily Hoard and Sophie Hoard; one brother, Jack Richardson of Jacinto; and one sister-in-law, Margie Hatcher and her husband, Robert of Marietta.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Hoard; sister, Beth Melton; and sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Richardson.
