TupeloDr. Antone Walter Tannehill, Jr. died Monday, April 3, 2006 at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born May 22, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Antone Walter and Marjorie Wyman Tannehill.
After graduating from Hattiesburg High School, he attended Vanderbilt University and graduated from Duke University Medical School in 1954. Following an internship at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, he served for two years as a medical officer in the United States Air Force. In 1957 he moved to Nettleton, Mississippi where he practiced family medicine for seven years. In 1964 he moved to New Orleans for a residency in internal medicine at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. In 1967 he moved to Tupelo and formed a partnership with Dr. F.L. Lummus. In 1976 the Lummus/Tannehill practice merged with that of Drs. Joe Bailey, Eugene Murphey, and Bill Woods to form Internal Medicine Associates from which he retired in 1997.
Dr. Tannehill served on many medical mission trips to Central America, Romania, and Cameroon, Africa. He helped to establish the Respiratory Therapy Program at ICC and served as Medical Director from its beginning in 1975 until 1987. He was involved in the establishment of the Good Samaritan Free Clinic and served as the Medical Director from 1997 until 2000. During his years of practice, Dr. Tannehill was presented the Community Service Award by the Mississippi Sate Medical Association; the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians, Mississippi/Louisiana chapter; and the first annual Physician of the Year (Golden Tongue Blade) Award from North Mississippi Medical Center. He was the recipient of the 1994 Tupelo Jr. Auxiliary Outstanding Citizen Award.
He was an active member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Tupelo. For several years he served on the Board of Directors of Global Outreach International and Faith Haven Shelter Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ron Richardson and Rev. Ann Houston Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Diane Evans Tannehill; three sons, Antone Walter Tannehill, III of Newhall, California, David Henderson Tannehill and wife, Melody, of Memphis, Tennessee, Jeffrey Wyman Tannehill of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Jonathan Davidson Tannehill, Katharine Margaret Tannehill, and Sara Augusta Tannehill, all of Memphis, Tennessee; a brother, Dr. John Franklin Tannehill and wife, Suzanne, of Clyde, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Lois Tannehill of Scottsdale, Arizona and Ruth Tannehill Engllish of Nashville, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Margaret Boxx, Mitzi Cook, Amanda Michael, Mickey Scott, Shirley Shumpert, Janice Wallace, and Joyce Webb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard Wyman Tannehill and Hugh Lawrence Tannehill.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Walter Bourland, Charles Doty, Dr. Benton Hilbun, Charles Johnston, Bill Lyle, Glenn McCullough, Bill Moore, Mark Monts, and Heywood Washburn.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Swan Burrus, John Castles, Dr. Floyd Lummus, and Ray Waters.
