Saltillo- Lois Ann Gusmus Sheffield, 82, died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Sanctuary Hospice House. She was born on April 22, 1936, to Charlie Theodore Gusmus and Julia Lois Barrett Gusmus in Sheffield, Alabama. In 1937, she moved to Saltillo, Mississippi. During her years at Saltillo High School she was a basketball star and even became captain of the varsity team her freshman year.



After graduating high school, she moved to Washington D.C. and worked for the F.B.I. for one year. She returned back home to Saltillo and worked at Pennsylvania Tire, Rockwell International, Green Street School during desegregation, and once she received her realtors license she worked at T.R.I for a number of years. She spent the majority of her career at Hilton Gardens Inns and Trace Inn in the sales and marketing departments. After her retirement, she wrote short stories for publication in the Daily Journal.



She enjoyed various activities including racket ball and water skiing. She was an avid gardener and bee keeper. She mostly loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of both St. James Catholic Church and St. Thomas Catholic Church, where she proudly played the organ.



Survivors include four children, Judge John Hoyt Sheffield and his wife, Lisa of the Auburn Community, Andy Sheffield of Saltillo, Sherry Sheffield Davis of Tupelo and Ted Sheffield and his wife, Sharon of Blue Springs; five grandchildren, Jonathan Davis, Benjamin Davis, Sarah Sheffield Monts, Max Sheffield and Elizabeth Sheffield; three great-grandchildren, Seth Sheffield, Emma Kate Davis and Elektra Monts and one brother, James Gusmus of Saltillo.



Preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, Cecilia Carr, Noble Gusmus, Raymond Gusmus and Paul Gusmus and grandson, Sgt. Joshua Sheffield.



Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ann's honor on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Father Joseph Le officiating. Graveside services will follow in St. Thomas Aquila’s Cemetery.



Pallbearers will be Jonathan Davis, Benjamin Davis, Willie Gusmus, Mike Gusmus, Ken Brown, James Moore and Dennis Barrett.
