Angela Poland

Belden " Angela Grillo Poland, 93, died Monday, August 10, 2009, at her residence after an extended illness. A native of Bound Brook, New Jersey, she was born January 8, 1916, to Alfonso and Anna DeBlanco Grillo. A 1934 graduate of Bound Brook High School, she then went on to Trenton State Teacher's College where she graduated in 1938. She taught physical education for six years in New Jersey from 1938 to 1944. During World War II she served as a First Lieutenant in the Women's Army Corp as a physical therapist stationed at Lawson General Hospital from 1944-1946. After the war she was stationed at Percy General Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich. from 1946-47. She was married April 24, 1948 to Maj. Eustis "Pete" Poland, Jr.. From 1952-1953 she taught kindergarten in Ft. Benning, Ga. In 1956 her family moved to Tupelo and she was director of Head Start from 1967 to 1971. She was a member of the Northeast Mississippi Art Association where she served as past president. She was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Paul Stevens and Rev. Gene Asbury officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Pete Poland, III and (Belva) and Paul Poland (Sandra) all of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Mandy Meek (Scott) of Conway, Arkansas, Kelly Marlin and (John Michael) of Tupelo, Michael Poland (Natalie) of Blue Springs and Jonathan Poland (Lane) of Starkville; five great grandchildren, Sarah Grace Meek, Madison Meek, Charlie Meek, John Luke Marlin and Jake Marlin; two sisters, Mary Krysiak of Lakehurst, N.J. and Dolores Gumerlock of Bound Brook, NJ; several nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years, Maj. Eustis "Pete" Poland who died May 1, 2009; a sister, Aurora Frey and a brother, Joseph Grillo.

Pallbearers will be Frank Anger, George Bobo, Jim Newell, Jack Phipps, Harry Collins, Andrew Battaile, and Joe O'Callaghan.

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the parish hall at the church.
