Douglas A. Johnston
Plantersville- Douglas Arlie Johnston, 87, died Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Countrywood Plantation in Mantachie. He was born March 7, 1936 to Arlie Johnston and Exie Davis Johnston in Lee County. Following his high school graduation, he honorably served his country in the United States Army as a cook. Douglas soon after earned his Diesel Mechanic Degree and spent 30 years of his career with Malone and Hyde. Throughout his life he was also a dedicated livestock farmer focusing mainly on cattle.
Although he was a hard-worker, he always managed to find time for his family. On February 6, 1960, he married Marion Manley and they spent 54 years together before her passing in April of 2014. He adored his grandchildren and took great pride in teaching them horseback riding among many other things.
Douglas was a faithful Brewer United Methodist Church member. He enjoyed his time spent with the Brewer UMC Men’s Club and his Hardee's Breakfast group. He loved listening to country music and would always have his radio on playing in the background.
Douglas was survived by his three daughters, Teresa Rakestraw of Plantersville, Susan Nichols of Tupelo, and Tina Johnson of Mantachie; five grandchildren, Reid Rakestraw, Riley Rakestraw, Marion Steele and her husband, Josh, Emma Nichols, and Julia Johnson; one great-grandson is expected in October; two brothers, Ronald Johnston and his wife, Sharon, and Charles Johnston and his wife, Linda, and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Johnston; his parents, Arlie and Exie Johnston; one sister, Mary Ellen Kellum; and one brother, Jimmy Johnston.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Pegues, Tupelo.
Services honoring his life will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues with Rev. Ed Temple officiating. Burial will follow at Brewer Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Reid Rakestraw, Riley Rakestraw, Joshua Steele, Jeff Kellum, Chuck Kellum, and Brent Johnston.
