Tupelo - E-9 Sgt Major Thomas Jefferson Tom Carr, Retired, 87, died Sunday, August 30, 2009, at his residence in the Andrews Chapel Community after a lengthy illness. A Lee County native, he was born September 5, 1921 to and Mary Cornelia Christian Carr and George Jefferson Carr. He joined the National Guard in 1937 and answered a call to service in the United States Army in November 1940 and served in World War II from 1940 to September 1945 in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg under General George Pattons Third Army. He continued in the National Guard until retiring in 1979. He was a member and deacon at Richmond Baptist Church. After retiring from Leggett & Platt in 1981, he worked at the garden center at WalMart. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite for 50+ years and was a past Master at the Richmond Masonic Lodge. He loved gardening, fishing, yard work and traveling.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Clay Anthony and Rev. Marvin Murphy officaiting, with Masonic and Military honors. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Crane (Jimmy) of Tupelo and Benita Tatum (Andy) of Fulton; one son, Thomas M. Carr (Sue) of Belvidere, TN; three granddaughters, Jeanine Little (Bobby) of Madison, Allison and Carla Tatum, both of Fulton; three grandsons, Eric Crane (Angie) of Golden, Brian Carr (Laura) of Oxford and Jon Tatum of Fulton; four great grandchildren, Madison Crane, Tyler Crane, Logan Crane and Tanner Carr; one brother, Hoyle Carr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Carr who preceded him in death on Novemeber 28, 2006; his parents; two brothers, Demp Carr and Troy Carr.

Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2009.

Memorials may be made to Richmond Baptist Church Building Fund.
