CHARLIE HAYES
TUPELOC.A. (Charlie) Hayes, 86, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at the Greenhouses at Trace after a lengthy illness. A Jackson native, he was born February 8, 1919 to the late Charles Duncan and Evadna Gordon Hayes. He was a veteran serving in the Navy during World War II. He had been a resident of Tupelo for the past 45 years. He was the widower of Mrs. Merriam Elizabeth Hayes who passed away October 26, 1997. During his working life, he was a District Engineer with Southern Bell where he was instrumental in bringing telephone service to much of rural Mississippi. He was also involved in the project that converted Oxford from telephone operator service to automated service. For the past 45 years he had been a member of First Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2006 in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Milton Winter officiating. Cremation will follow.
Survivors include two children, Carolyn Hayes Trayal and her husband, Chuck, of Germantown, TN, and Randy Hayes of Seattle WA; six grandchildren, Kevin Hayes of Baton Rouge, LA; Kathy Hayes Fallen of Richmond, VA; Summer Hayes of Seattle, Birch Hayes of Seattle, Chuck Trayal, Jr, of Germantown, and Liz Ann Trayal of Oxford; and five great- grandchildren.
One son, Charles Hayes Jr. and a brother, Gordon Hayes preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
