B.L. Phillips Sr.
OAK HILL - Bervis Len "Red" Phillips Sr., 83, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the North Miss. Medical Center after an extended illness. A Lee County native, he was born Jan. 3, 1924, to the late Jim and Nannie Lou Oswalt Phillips. Earlier in his life he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps and he had worked for over 48 years with I.M.C. in Tupelo. He was a longtime resident of the Oak Hill community and was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardener and until last year when his health began to decline had always maintained a large vegetable garden every summer. His wife of 56 years, Etma Jewel Whitten Phillips, preceded him in death on May 23, 1998.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Donnie Riley and the Rev Danny Rushing officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Dianne Wigginton (John) and Judy McGaugh (Johnny) of the Oak Hill community and June Lyle (Butch) of the Beach Springs community; three sons, James Lackey (Becky) of Guntown, B.L. Phillips Jr. (Jan) of Beach Springs and bobby Joe Phillips (Linda) of Plantersville; three sisters, Mildred Criddle of Houston, Ruth Funderburk of the Eggville community and Shirley Parker of Blue Springs; two brothers, John Wayne Phillips and Kenneth Ray Phillips, both of Saltillo; 12 grandchildren, Kay Harlow, Sherry Clarity, Brad Lackey, Jimmy Lackey, Bryan Phillips, Kirk Phillips, Mandy Klauser, Sharon Dean, Codi Leigh Phillips, Courtney Phillips, Hope Johns and Phillip Lyle; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Phillips, Kirk Phillips, Phillip Lyle, Brad Lackey, Ken Houston and Jim Houston.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
